Ephraim's Spiritual Heritage

Ephraim's picturesque beauty is not its most abiding quality.  More significant is that Ephraim is a rare enclave of the spirit.  It is a village built on many values, and its name is of biblical origin which literally means "doubly fruitful."

The shaping of Ephraim's sprititual values began in 1853 when the village was established as a Moravian religious community, led northward from an earlier home in Green Bay by pastor Rev. Andreas Iverson, who lifted his first axe "with a psalm." and who sprititually sustained the colony through two bitter winters of near starvation when the supply boats were frozen into the Green Bay harbor.  Pastor Iverson nurtured his small flock and built the first church in Door County, the Ephraim Moravian Church.  After 12 years of labor, the time came in 1864 for Pastor Iverson to carry his mission elsewhere.

Even when non-Moravians joined the community, a common reverance persisted for things beyond man as well as a respect for the family of man.  Ephraim represents a remarkable blend of natural beauty and spiritual values.  The two white church steeples on Moravia Street -- one Moravian, one Lutheran -- stand as cathedrals of the spirit of Ephraim.
