Experience Ephraim as a student attending the historic Pioneer Schoolhouse. Built in 1880, this one room school helped to shape the minds of multiple generations of young Ephraim residents.

In 1857, a handful of years after Ephraim was founded, Reverend Andreas Iverson noticed the village’s need for a formal school. The first classes were held in a small building made of flat-hewn logs located behind Reverend Iverson’s home.

Twenty three years later, the tiny school was no longer able to accommodate Ephraim’s growing population. The Pioneer Schoolhouse was constructed to hold larger class sizes, sometimes hosting almost seventy students at once. This one room school served the children of Ephram for sixty eight years.

In 1949, the Pioneer Schoolhouse closed its doors for good. After plans were made to tear down the school building that same year, members of Ephraim’s community rallied to protect this historic site. The building was purchased and the Ephraim Foundation (now the Ephraim Historical Foundation) was formed.
